Tracing the Evolution in the Online Gaming Industry

The history of gaming dates back to the early 1950s. Since then, the gaming industry worldwide has witnessed significant growth and has now turned into one of the most profit- churning sectors across industries. The constant developments in technology have led to a boom in the mobile gaming industry. This has sparked the birth of a modern gaming generation who very well knows how to make money out of gaming. As opposed to the previous century, gaming is a widely known phenomenon. There is hardly anyone who wouldn’t know what PUBG or angry birds is.

DR. Edward Uhler Condon is credited with unveiling the first gaming machine in the year 1940. This gained massive popularity amongst the public and was reportedly used by 50,000 people. The second most significant development was the release of the brown box in the year 1967. When connected to a TV set, this box enabled users to control cubes on the screen and play other sports games, such as ping pong. This box was later licensed to Magnavox, which then led to the release of –  Magnavox Odyssey in 1972. Many experts view this as the birth of the digital gaming sphere, as we know it today.

Sega and Taito are credited with arousing the public’s interest in gaming. Nolan Bushnell, the godfather of gaming, in the year 1972, introduced Atari- which sparked a significant evolution in the field of large-scale gaming. The games developed required the players to maintain high scores and remain active, which sparked competition amongst them.

In the late 1970s, multiplayer gaming started to gain precedence. Empire was the first game that led to separate players competing on individual screens. Now, players could save their scores and make a mark in the public eye. This caught the younger generation by a storm and gained immense popularity among school going kids.

As time progressed, the quality and style of gaming also developed. Games like Gunfight enabled players to make use of a single joystick to make moves and shoot. Soon, magazines such as Creative Computing and Computer Gaming World were released, which helped set up a community of gamers. Soon, home computers started to grow in popularity and were brought by families because they were affordable and valuable. They, in a way, caused gaming to develop further.

However, the credit goes to the internet, which brought about a real revolution in the sphere of gaming. Multiplayer gaming was now easily possible, letting people compete and interact from across the globe. The internet has a vital role to play in the evolution of gaming. Most of the games now are cloud-based, and most of them are digitally accessible. The gaming industry is unstoppable now, especially after the onset of the pandemic, and it shows no signs of stopping any time soon. With ample options to choose from- Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PS5, etc., gamers are spoilt for choice. The concept of gaming is here to stay for long. However, the only changes that will happen will be concerning the devices that we use.

Looking at the gaming industry today, the internet and computer processors have improved manifolds. The cost of playing a game and competing has also reduced from what it used to be earlier, thus letting more and more people become a part of the community. Free roam games that allow the player to move freely through a virtual world have become very popular. Every new batch of a game creates a new benchmark in the gaming industry. Mobile gaming is another important development that took place in the past few years. This helped gaming become a major pop culture phenomenon. Gaming arenas have become more accessible to players and help in bringing the gaming communities together. These things combined have helped bring a significant shift in the world of gaming. It was not very long ago when online gaming was looked down upon, but the world has changed now, and it will be interesting to see how gaming develops with time.
